Frequently asked questions
With so many products, features and options, cloud solutions can be complicated and confusing. Here are some of the common questions we get asked:
Are cloud solutions secure?
Yes, or more correctly, they should be. Like any system, its level of security is dependent on how it is managed. When properly configured, regularly audited and aligned to best practice, cloud systems are far more secure than their on-premise counterparts.
Where does my data go?
This depends on the product. Most reputable cloud providers will provide transparency around data sovereignty, some even provide options to ensure your data stays within the country. It’s important to be partnered with an MSP that will help do the work for you to find out these things and know what to ask.
Why does everything have to be a subscription?
Unfortunately, this is just how the business model of cloud companies work. These systems are often housed in large, very expensive data centres with multiple layers of redundancy. Your subscription revenue allows the company to maintain and upgrade their data centers, provide ongoing support and product development, and maintain tight security operations of their platform. In return, this gives you access to a system with a level of performance and redundancy that would be otherwise unattainable for an SMB.
Isn’t it cheaper to just buy another server?
Like for like yes, it normally is or at least appears to be. It also pays to consider the other soft costs surrounding your IT infrastructure. Costs such as worker productivity, downtime, lack of innovation, integrations or automation, perceived risks, etc. Cloud has come a long way and you’re no longer comparing apples with apples. We don’t force our clients one way or the other, but we do ensure businesses are armed with all the facts they need to make an informed decision.
Will I need all new computers?
Generally, no, but it can depend on what you are coming from. If you are migrating from an older remote desktop environment with thin clients then it will be time to upgrade. Or, if you previously had not been using business grade equipment or professional versions of Windows then this will likely need to be addressed. Ultimately a move to cloud should be focused on improving productivity. If replacing devices is going to further enhance ROI then it should be part of the conversation.
What’s your recommendation, Microsoft or Google?
Whilst we can support either ecosystem and both have their advantages, we tend to find Microsoft 365 is generally a better fit for most businesses we look after. In general, Google’s advantage is in flexibility & ease of use, whereas Microsoft 365 tends to be more structured, familiar, and provides far greater control over security, access and device management. Both these products are continually evolving so having a well-thought-out strategy is the key to getting the most value in either case.
Can you provide us with our Microsoft 365 licenses?
Yes, we manage our clients’ licenses and regularly check to ensure that we’re not charging for licenses not in use.
Do I need extra things on top of Microsoft 365?
We always recommend a 3rd party SaaS backup to accompany Microsoft 365. This will keep a backup of all your 365 data to easily restore files & functionality if the need should ever arise. There are several other complimentary products to consider, but these are a case by case basis which we go through with you.
